To ensure the safe delivery of natural gas to consumers, and to meet the requirements of Evergreen Gas Co-op, the following documentation and procedures must be completed before a natural gas meter can be installed.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping ensure the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas service to our members. Evergreen Gas Co-op reserves the right to refuse or delay meter installation until all required permits, documentation, and testing requirements have been satisfactorily completed.
Requirements
- Gas Permit: A copy of the applicable gas permit must be provided to Evergreen Gas Co-op prior to meter installation. Under no circumstances will a meter be installed without the required permit documentation. Evergreen Gas Co-op strongly recommends that permits be obtained by the person performing the work.
- Pressure Test:
- An Evergreen Gas Co-op representative must witness the CSA B149.1 required air pressure test; or
- A Service Completion Notification Form completed by a certified Gasfitter must be submitted to Evergreen Gas Co-op.
Permit Responsibilities
The Alberta Safety Codes Authority “Who should apply for permits?” section advises that:
- If you have hired contractors to do the work, it will be more beneficial for you to have the contractors obtain the safety codes permits.
- If you are building or doing work on your own home (includes farm), you as the homeowner may obtain the permits.
- If the work is to buildings or things where you do not reside, then the permits will need to be obtained by your contractor.
For this reason, Evergreen Gas Co-op recommends that the individual or company performing the gasfitting work to obtain the required permits whenever applicable.
To find the appropriate permit issuer for your location, visit the “Where to Get a Permit” page on the Safety Codes Council website.
Meter Installation Requests
To allow for scheduling and processing of required documentation, please allow at least two (2) full working days’ notice when requesting a meter installation. Evergreen Gas Co-op cannot guarantee meter installation appointments for requests received with less notice.
Meter installation and/or gas service activation may be delayed if required documentation has not been received or if testing requirements have not been satisfied.
Appliance Start-Up
Before requesting meter installation, the installer shall ensure that the installation is complete and complies with all applicable code requirements, including the installer responsibilities outlined in CSA B149.1:20, Clause 4.3.
Following meter installation, the initial start-up and operation of gas-fired appliances shall be carried out by a competent person. The person performing the start-up is responsible for ensuring that the appliance is operated safely and in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions and applicable code requirements.
The installation of a meter or activation of gas service by Evergreen Gas Co-op does not constitute verification or approval of appliance start-up, operation, or commissioning. Responsibility for the safe start-up and operation of appliances rests with the person performing the start-up, including where the installer has directed the property owner or occupant to perform the initial start-up.
Under no circumstance will Evergreen Gas Co-op perform initial start-up or commissioning of appliances.
Secondary Service Lines
When Evergreen Gas Co-op will be constructing a secondary gas line for a customer installation, the contractor is requested to include this work on their permit application whenever possible. This helps ensure all gas work associated with the project is covered under a single permit and may prevent the customer from being charged for multiple permits.
Evergreen Gas Co-op will obtain a permit when installing a secondary gas line or associated piping. The customer will be responsible for the permit cost.
